Privacy Policy

Last Updated: September 10, 2026

ShareDOM is open-source software published in two forms: a library you add to your own project, and a Chrome extension. Both are designed with privacy by default, and this policy covers them both: zero telemetry, zero analytics tracking, zero account requirements, and zero remote data transmission.

🧩

One Codebase, Two Products

ShareDOM is distributed as an npm library that you install into your own project, and as a Chrome extension for capturing pages while you browse. They are not separate programs: the extension bundles the library's own source into its package at build time and drives it through a visual interface. Everything below applies to both, except where a section names one of them.

📦

The ShareDOM Library (npm)

  • It acts only when your code calls it: The library has no background activity and no lifecycle of its own. Nothing happens until your application invokes one of its functions.
  • Results stay in your project: Snapshots, images, PDFs and ZIP archives are produced in the visitor's browser or on your own Node.js, Next.js or SvelteKit server, then handed back to your code. ShareDOM never uploads them anywhere.
  • No storage, no identifiers: The library writes nothing to localStorage, cookies or disk, and creates no device or user identifier.
  • Console and network capture is opt-in: The helpers that record console output and HTTP requests stay dormant until your code calls startConsoleCapture() or startNetworkCapture(). What they record is held in memory so you can render it, and never leaves the page or server.
🧭

The ShareDOM Chrome Extension

  • It acts only when you start it: The extension declares no content scripts and never runs on pages by itself. It touches a tab only after you click the toolbar icon, press Alt+Shift+S, or choose its context menu item.
  • Console and network capture stays in the page: Once you start the inspector on a tab, ShareDOM keeps that page's console output and network requests (method, address, status and duration, up to 100 of each) in the page's own memory so you can capture them as an image or PDF. It is never written to disk, never sent anywhere, and it is gone when you reload or close the tab.
  • Local settings only: The one thing the extension stores is your own interface preferences (default scale, export format and language) in chrome.storage.local on your own machine.
🎯

Chrome Extension: Single Purpose Declaration

The ShareDOM extension exists solely to let you inspect and capture high-resolution images of DOM elements, console output, and network requests on a page you explicitly choose to inspect.

🛡️

What Neither of Them Collects

  • No Personal Information: We do not collect names, email addresses, IP addresses, location data, or device identifiers.
  • No Browsing History: Neither the library nor the extension tracks the pages you visit, your tab activity, or anything across sites. The extension never runs in the background; it acts on a page only when you start it yourself.
  • No Telemetry or Analytics: No third-party trackers (such as Google Analytics, Mixpanel, or Sentry) are included or loaded in the extension or library.
  • Local Execution: DOM snapshotting, image formatting (PNG, JPEG, WebP), PDF generation and clipboard operations all run inside your browser. To embed pictures the page already displays, a capture re-requests them from their original addresses, without adding any information about you.
🔑

Chrome Extension Permissions Justification

To function correctly as a browser extension, ShareDOM declares the minimal necessary permissions required to inspect elements and generate screenshots:

activeTab

Enables the extension to interact with the currently active browser tab only when you explicitly invoke it (e.g., clicking the toolbar icon, pressing Alt+Shift+S, or selecting the context menu item).

scripting

Allows the extension to inject the DOM inspection content script into the active page upon explicit user trigger, displaying the visual highlight overlay.

storage

Used exclusively to persist your user UI preferences (such as default resolution scale, preferred image export format, and language) locally in your browser storage (`chrome.storage.local`).

contextMenus

Adds the "Inspect & Capture DOM Element" option to your browser right-click context menu for rapid access.

🚫

Third-Party Services & Remote Code

Neither the library nor the extension contains remote code or loads external scripts: the extension bundles the library at build time, so everything it runs ships inside the package you install. Nothing is sent to any API server or third party. The only network requests either one makes are for images already present on the page being captured, so they can be embedded in the result.

Open Source Transparency

ShareDOM is free and open-source software released under the MIT License. The library and the extension live in the same public repository, so every claim on this page can be checked against the source at github.com/Erickgiber/sharedom ↗ .
